Since World War II and prior to April 2nd of this year, there have been two economic shocks that tipped the global economy into recession: The 2008 financial crash, and the 2020 COVID pandemic. The United States’ recent imposition of high tariffs on trading partners around the world could well be the third such shock in 17 years, and even in the nearest term will present compliance and risk management challenges that most enterprise leaders today have never seen. Those new tariffs are also only a part of the entire range of developments in international trade regulation – including sanctions, export controls, and even a new tier of investment immigration – that have been put in place in the first quarter of 2025.

Join counsel from our international trade regulatory practice for an overview of the measures that have been imposed, thoughts about their context and the prospects for easing of these measures, and with the benefit of experience from the last Trump administration’s previous tariff impositions, compliance and risk management measures that can be deployed to help navigate these new waters.
