Senior Counsel

Carl Rashid is a leader among Michigan’s property tax lawyers. He has represented public and private interests in assessment appeals, valuation disputes, and tax and economic incentives involving industrial, office, medical and assisted living, and multitenant retail properties.

While Carl has contributed to some of the most significant economic development initiatives in Detroit and Southeast Michigan, such as securing for an automotive manufacturer what remains the largest economic tax incentive in state history, not all of his clients are Fortune 500 corporations. He also counsels small businesses, closely held companies, investors, and individuals in state and local real estate and personal property valuation disputes as well as condemnation and government affairs matters.

Clients concerned with controlling operational overhead rely on Carl to ensure their property tax valuations are fair. When a property is over-assessed, Carl’s successful appeal allows the business to be more competitive and profitable. Often, the savings enable the client to create skilled jobs, bring back laid-off workers, build new facilities, and reinvigorate the surrounding community.

The term “tax dispute” might suggest Carl’s practice is adversarial; in fact, he views it as far more collaborative.

During his tenure as Assistant Corporation Counsel of the City of Detroit advising on property tax and assessment matters, Carl recognized the importance of building relationships with opposing counsel and outside lawyers.

Since then, he has continued to develop strategic relationships to facilitate the best outcomes for his clients.
