Karen R. Poppel

Senior Counsel

Combining technical expertise, legal acumen, and determined advocacy in equal measure, Karen Poppel is an experienced and formidable intellectual property litigator who asserts and defends her clients' patent, trademark, and trade secret rights in forums across the country.

A scientific background and passion for research and discovery facilitate Karen's understanding of the technology that lies at the heart of complex patent disputes. Her ability to speak the language of scientists, engineers, and experts helps her identify the strengths and weaknesses of claims to develop the most effective case strategies. Karen is also adept at making complex and dense scientific and technical subjects understandable for judges and other decision-makers.

Karen's clients come from many industries, including the chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sectors. She has experience with all manner of intellectual property litigation and has handled matters in federal courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).

Karen holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in chemistry from Emory University, where her graduate thesis work focused on synthetic riboswitches, and a J.D. from the George Washington University Law School. In law school, she served as a judicial extern to the Honorable John M. Facciola in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

I truly enjoy learning about and immersing myself in the details of my clients' innovations. Understanding the technology at issue is essential for the formulation of successful patent litigation strategies.
