Shannon M. McKeon

Senior Trademark Counsel

A broad, sophisticated global perspective and a keen eye for the smallest details may seem like opposite ends of the spectrum, but they are the defining, essential qualities that make Shannon M. McKeon so effective at protecting and maximizing the value of her clients' trademarks, domain names and brands.

While the domestic and international trademark clearance and prosecution work that makes up the bulk of Shannon's practice spans a wide range of industries, including retail and clothing, restaurants, automotive, and e-commerce, she is particularly well-versed in the complexities and nuances involved in pharmaceutical-related IP matters. She has extensive experience leading large clearance projects for her pharma clients, helping them secure strong, enduring marks that position them for success in the marketplace.

Shannon's trademark experience predates her practice, as she developed her skills and understanding of the legal landscape while working as a trademark paralegal and law clerk at two AmLaw firms before joining Dykema. In those roles, she acquired deep substantive knowledge in trademark prosecution and maintenance of U.S. and international trademark applications and registrations, enforcement of trademark rights, domain name, internet law issues and opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Supremely organized, innately creative, and with a collaborative spirit, Shannon also has an impressive history of protecting her clients' online presence and brands. She has a long-standing involvement in matters involving domain names, including infringements, transfers, and recovery of domain names through various enforcement measures. She has a strong record of prevailing in complaints filed under ICANN's Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy, and her work has led to the transfer of many valuable domain names to her clients.

In addition to benefiting her clients, Shannon's deep knowledge of the legal framework governing domain names has made her a respected member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), where she served on its Internet Committee and drafted many comments and white papers regarding the regulation of the domain name system and other internet-related matters, including ICANN's roll-out of new gTLDs.

Shannon is also licensed in Virginia and assists with hearings in the local general district and circuit courts throughout the Commonwealth. She has appeared as local counsel and handled cases involving warrants in debt, contract disputes, and mechanic's lien matters.

Passionate about serving others, Shannon has an active pro bono practice, with a particular focus on children and immigration matters. She has assisted pro bono clients in a number of family matters involving guardianship and child support issues and immigration matters such as applications for U-Visas, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and petitions for asylum. Her pro bono work also spans landlord/tenant matters, where she assists low-income residents in Washington, DC with housing complaints and violations.

In an interconnected global marketplace, effective trademark work not only requires an understanding of the relevant legal issues and regimes, but also an appreciation of the cultural nuances and sensitivities that can have a significant impact on the value and strength of a brand.
